At a Glance
As the iron horse galloped across the state in the mid-1800’s, a rich history and heritage began. Early settlers to the Lee County area were the Wends from Lusatia in 1855. They established the Wendish community of Serbin, eight miles outside of Giddings.
The land on which the town of Giddings sits was awarded to Giles Giddings, who was mortally wounded in the Battle of San Jacinto. His heirs, the brothers J.D. and Dewitt Giddings, helped finance the Houston & Texas Central Railway, creating the town of Giddings in 1871 as commerce and travel expanded throughout the region. Giddings was voted the County Seat of Lee County in 1874.
Giddings is a gateway to rural Texas, surrounded on all sides by almost 20 other interesting rural Texas towns in a thirty mile radius. It is about halfway between Houston and Austin on Highway 290 making it the perfect meeting spot. It’s about two hours from Houston and one hour from Austin.
